8/26/94 – Santa Barbara, California
This was a good day. We had a nice ride to Santa Barbara with decent conversation and a pretty kick ass game of Scatagories. Got to Santa Barbara and immediately liked it there. Everyone seemed super cool and not as uptight as I thought they would be. Rye played well and got a great reception. Kids swarmed to buy shirts and demos and at some point we ran out of demo covers. It looked like we were screwed until our new friend Nicki took us to Kinko’s and got them all printed for free. Met the icon known as Kent McClard and he just seemed like an easy-going goofball to me.
The show was held on a Friday night on a street full of frat houses for the UC of Santa Barbara, so my time was occupied watching the drunken revelry of jocks beating the crap out of one another. The sight of cops riding bikes and wearing shorts confused us all, especially when said jocks took them seriously. The capper on the night was a fight where the two participants kept hopping fences to keep the cops away. I’m telling ya, all this violence would only happen at a Kent McClard show!
BELOW: A year later, the love affair between Rye Coalition and Santa Barabara/HeartAttack fanzine was apparently over and done.
mean people fest…quite the lineup!
